One of the many tasks of the BMBF is to provide funding in all areas of science. For example, the BMBF provides basic funding for the German Research Foundation and the Helmholtz Association, as well as part of the basic funding for the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer Society.

In addition, it supports research projects within the framework of funding programs to which applicants can apply.
